Inkheart By Cornelia Funke

Brief Summary: Inkheart is a YA fantasy novel, the first book in the Inkworld trilogy, written by German author Cornelia Funke and published in 2003. The story follows bookish twelve-year-old Meggie, who learns that her bookbinder father Mortimer or 'Mo' has a special gift: he can bring fictional characters to life. So when Meggie was three, Mo read aloud from a book called Inkheart, conveying the feelings of the novel into the world - the villainous Capricorn and his henchmen, and the mysterious Dustfinger, a fire-eater. But this power came with a price, as Meggie's mother disappeared into the novel in their place. So Meggie, Mo and Meggie's aunt Elinor must fight to stop Capricorn's plot and try to rescue Meggie's mother from her fate.
Our Favourite Character: Dustfinger
Dustfinger is a famed fire-eater, widely praised and known as the Fire-Dancer, of the Inkworld. He has the constant companion of Gwin, his marten with horns, which is usually found perched on his shoulder. Dustfinger is generally seen as a coward and even admitted as one. He primarily considers self-preservation as a top priority. He, however, became braver and less fearful than in the time before his death after coming back to life. Dustfinger had three scars. Two on his left cheek and one on his right cheek running from ear to nostril. These were inflicted by Basta when he realized the fire-eater was Roxane's lover. However, with the help of fairies that Dustfinger had befriended,[3] the scars were little more than thin lines by the time he appeared in front of the Folcharts.[4] He has sandy blonde hair that reaches just above his shoulders.[4] It has also been stated that he has stubble on his cheeks in Inkheart.
Our Rating of the Book: 8/10
Overall it was a fantastic read, the characters were drawn out well, and the plot was excellent. Even though we did find some parts a bit weird and could have been written differently to make more sense for the audience that would typically be reading this book. We highly recommend this book to everyone since it is a young adult novel.
